It’s June. The “New Year, New Mission” energy of January has faded, and the high-stakes pressure of the year-end giving season still feels miles away. This is the “danger zone”—the mid-year slump where assumptions go to die.
By now, your nonprofit is operating on plans made six months ago. But in the real world, six months is an eternity. Priorities shift, staff members get tired, and “mission creep” starts to settle in like dust.
The 4-Point Mid-Year Audit
- Alignment: The “Mission Creep” Test Look at your current projects. Are you doing them because they move the needle, or because a specific donor liked the idea? If you’ve drifted away from your core mission, June is the time to reel it back in. It is better to do three things excellently than ten things poorly.
- Capacity: The Burnout Check Check in on your team. If you’ve added three new initiatives since January but haven’t added a single staff member or automated a single process, your “impact” is being built on the backs of exhausted people. That is not sustainable.
- Communication: The Impact Narrative If a major donor walked into your office today and asked, “What have you actually achieved since January 1st?”—could you answer with data, or would you give them a vague anecdote? Use this month to gather your wins (and your lessons) so you aren’t scrambling in December.
- Systems: The “Leak” Search Are your internal controls holding up? Are your reports being filed on time? If your systems are feeling “clunky” under the current workload, they will absolutely break during the Q4 rush. Fix the leak now while the water is calm.
Leadership is about the courage to pause. Taking a week in June to reassess isn’t a “break” from the work—it is the work.
